2017 Social Media Stats.Social Media gains even more momentum rolling into 2017 and we’ve picked out a handful of interesting stats to help keep you informed. Right off the bat, 2017 marks a major milestone in web usage as half of the world’s population is now connected to the internet. This accounts for a 10% increase in the total number of web users compared to last last year.
In line with the larger trend on the internet, We Are Social indicates that mobile browsing currently accounts for half of the world’s web traffic, noting a 30-percent increase in mobile usage year-on-year. Social media has also seen a healthy growth of 8% year-on-year to score an impressive total penetration of 37%.
To give you some more context, 2.539 billion of all 2.789 billion social media users came from mobile users. Needless to say, laptop and desktop devices mark a 20% decrease in usage, dropping to 45% of the entire web traffic around the globe.
This trend was clear in the U.S. Mobile advertising surpassed desktop search as the largest online ad format, making up 47% of digital revenue in the first half of 2016, according to the IAB/Price Waterhouse Cooper.
It isn’t surprising that Facebook dominated ad revenue in 2016, taking in 67.9% of social media advertising spend. It was a rosy picture all round, with social media ad spend doubling worldwide over the past two years – rising from $16 billion in 2014 to $31 billion n in 2016.
Instagram is on track to generate $1.53 billion in mobile ad revenue worldwide in 2016. That’s an impressive year-on-year increase of 144% Recent research from the BIA/Kelsey Industry Watch report forecasts that U.S. mobile ad spending overall will grow from $33 billion in 2016 to $72 billion by 2021.
Perhaps most significantly, though, it is predicted that digital ad spend in the U.S. will surpass television spend for the first time ever in 2017.
